Giulianova is home to one of the four ports of the Abruzzo region, the only one in the province. The inhabited area is divided into two main conglomerations, which have been connected to each other in the last decades: Giulianova, also known as Giulianova Paese or Giulianova Alta, and Giulianova Lido or Giulianova Spiaggia. The first includes the historic centre and stretches over a hill of modest altitude (only 68 m asl) about 1 km from the coastline, while the Lido consists of the most modern and tourist part, developed during the twentieth century on the shores of the Adriatic.Giulianova with about 25 thousand inhabitants is among the largest municipalities of the Abruzzo coast, is equipped with excellent accommodation facilities and a large and long beach, granting the Blue Flag to the city for years. The presence of a dynamic port makes of Giulianova an important maritime authority. Giulianova is located between two rivers delimiting the territory: to the north the Salinello (which acts as a border with Tortoreto) and to the south the Tordino. Giulianova is divided into Giulianova Alta and Giulianova Lido, the latter as most of the towns on the Abruzzo coast has more recent origins and was born with the advent of the Adriatic railway in the sixties of the nineteenth century. The historical town is in the high part (only 68 meters above sea level) and the origins start from the prehistoric period, passing through the Roman period. Giulianova in the past was called Castel San Flaviano then, in 1471 Giuliantonio di Acquaviva rebuilt the town, naming it ‘Giulia Nova’ (new Giulia in honour of his name). The ancient Giulianova is unique from an architectural point of view that had as maximum interpreters the architectural and artistic genius of the famous Leon Battista Alberti and Francesco Di Giorgio Martini (more info on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giulianova)
